Ski School

Dallas-Ft. Worth WaterSki & Wakeboard School & Camp

Just got back last week from the best slalom skiing instruction I have ever had. The instructors really know what they are doing and they make it fun for the adults as well as kids. There was all ages represented from beginner to advanced. It was also fun to see the small kids getting out there and learning. I am planning on taking my five year old next year. If you are even slightly interested in learning how to ski or wakeboard or need to polish up on your skills, you will not be disappointed. They will take the fear out of it and make it a day of fun. Fly Fishing School for beginners

Three Rivers Fly Shop is offering a Fly Fishing School for Beginners
June 5-6, 2010

WHAT TO EXPECT –
Classes will begin each day at 8 a.m. and will continue through 4 p.m.  You will have casting instruction, learn to tie necessary knots, basic entomology and stream strategy, fly presentation and on-the-river instruction.  Lunch will be included each day as well.

COST –
The cost of this two-day course is $300 per person.  Don’t miss this opportunity to take advantage of this class.  You will learn more in two days than you will in a year of self-teaching.

EQUIPMENT –
If you already own your equipment, you should bring them.  But if you don’t, we will be happy to provide them at no additional charge.

Bass, Crappie hot on Broken Bow Lake now

It’s that time of year for some awesome fishing at Broken Bow Lake. The Bass have been staging for the spawn and it is fast approaching and the action on the lake is great. This is the first year in several that the weather has actually cooperated and the lake levels are normal giving us a great fishing season. Here is a nice largemouth and some crappie I caught yesterday afternoon. There was  not a cloud in the sky and the water is crystal clear so I was a bit surprised when I felt that much pull after setting the hook. Got him on a light action rod with 6 lb test. It was quite the fight and I’m ready for the next one. We have some awesome guides in the area so give us a call or look at our activities page for more info.

Broken Bow snow

If you’re waiting until summer to enjoy all of what Beaver’s Bend has to offer, you may want to think again. The 6″ snowfall that we were unexpectedly blanketed with in February made for some awesome scenery. I decided to get some pics while it was snowing and climbed the cedar bluff trail overlooking the Mountain Fork River. This is a popular hiking trail when it is warmer but there was no one around this time and the solitude along with a torrent of big flakes drifting down made for a truly unique experience. People tend to think of  Colorado and the Midwest for a nostalgic place to stay and get snowed in and maybe traversing the wilderness but that may be as far as some get. Being only three hours from Dallas and close to several other metro areas, our cabins in Broken Bow are a great, close alternative to a full blown vacation in the Rockies and even if for a day or two, one can have one of the best outdoor experiences right in your own back yard. There are still plenty of things to do at Beaver’s Bend this time of year and many people don’t know about this area.   Once you’ve been you will definitely want to come back!

Trout fishing outlook outstanding for 2010

The Oklahoma Wildlife Department will stock six additional loads of trout from January through March in the Mountain Fork River along with the regular scheduled stockings. That’s 40,000 additional trout! One’s chances of filling their stringer just shot up. You can log on to the wildlife department’s website by clicking on the link above for information about the stocking schedules, tips on how to catch trout, fishing licenses / regulations, and other information. January Deer sightings

Have seen LOTS of deer lately in Beaver’s Bend Park and the surrounding area. It is not unusual to see them all year round but they have been out in droves lately and don’t really pay attention to people. How do they know deer season is over? I just happened to have the camera with me this time so here is some footage of some crossing the Mountain Fork River. This is the second time we have seen several deer crossing the river.

Beaver’s Bend State Park

broken-bow-cabins-54 The list of things to do for outdoor enthusiasts plus the spectacular scenery make Beavers Bend Park one of the best in Oklahoma.  The pristine Mountain Fork River winds it’s way through the lush, forested mountains in the heart of the Park where hiking trails abound, many running parallel to the edge of the river. Trout fishing is open year-round and canoe rentals are popular in the warmer months and must be experienced to take in the true beauty of the park.

The Forest Heritage Center Museum lies in the center of the park and has great information and exhibits detailing the history of the area.   Not far away lies Beavers Bend Restaurant that has a huge deck overlooking the River. More facts about the park include: It was built by the CCC in the 1930s. There is no charge to enter. You will see lots of wildlife. There is a Nature Center where wounded and injured wildlife are nurtured back to health. The Beavers Bend Paddle Boats, putt-putt golf, canoes and swim beach are popular throughout the summer. Campsites and RV hookups are available by calling the park office at 580-494-6300.The Forest Heritage Center features the history of the forest, wood turners exhibit, and hosts the annual summer Owa-Chito art show & photography contest. They also host the Fall Festival with handmade soaps, crafts, petting zoo and more. There are several festivals and activities scheduled throughout the year and many other activities.

Mountain Fork River

The Mountain Fork River is Oklahoma’s only year-round trout stream and holds the state record Brown trout at 17lbs 4 oz.

Anglers often leave bragging about the amount of fish caught and the accessibility of the river which provides plenty of bank fishing and wading areas. The Three Rivers Fly Shop is the authority for fly fishing information and guided trips in the area.

The river runs through the middle of Beaver’s Bend State Park and has many hiking trails that follow the scenic river.

Broken Bow Lake

Broken Bow Lake is just one of the many attractions that draw people to the area year after year for many reasons. It is surrounded by the mountains of the Ouachita National Forest with it’s lush, tall pines and hardwoods, making for breathtaking scenery. The steep mountainous landscape and rocky bottom make for incredibly crystal clear water that is home to many species of fish including small- mouth and largemouth bass and crappie which are in good numbers here. The Oklahoma state record largemouth was caught here in 1999 and weighed 11lbs 12oz. Another benefit of the deep, cold water that the lake is blessed with is the trout fishery program the state has perfected over the years on the Mountain Fork River.

Broken Bow Lake is not only known for it’s fine fishing but also is a water lover’s haven. the summer draws people to the calm, clear waters for all kinds of water sports. Wakeboard boats and pontoon style runabouts are abundant when the weather is good but the lake never seems to get crowded. It is big enough that there is always plenty of room whether you are on the open water or you find one of the numerous coves and deep creeks to explore. There are not many lakes, if any, that can boast the beauty, peacefulness, and seclusion that Broken Bow Lake can and still have Luxury cabin rentals just minutes away to relax in style after a long day of play.

Bald Eagles on the Mountain Fork River

bald-eagle Saw a bald eagle today while I was trout fishing on the river with my son who is 11. He (the bird) flew a ways down the length of the river away from me and perched on a tree top. We hopped in the truck and drove down a ways where a couple had spotted it also and we borrowed their binoculars to get a closer look.  Pretty cool.

The river as well as Broken Bow Lake are known for the bald eagle population especially this time of year. The trout fishing is also great right now and no fighting crowds to get those premium spots. Book a cabin today and come check it out.

Holidays at Broken Bow Cabins

Comments we hear time and again this time of year are how great it is to spend the holidays here amongst the peace and quiet of the pines. Guests are saying that a fully furnished cabin with everything you need to prepare dinner for a large group is the perfect way to be together. The cabins have plenty of room and if football is not on everyone’s list after eating there is plenty of other things to do like trout fishing, hiking, biking, explore the national forest, deer watching, eagle watching, and the list goes on. Deer Hunting

Hunting in McCurtain County can truly be a great experience. With thousands of acres of National Forest to explore, it won’t be hard to find that perfect spot to hang your stand or still hunt and take in some beautiful country. You can navigate the area on an ATV but be sure to check out the rules and regulations on our site. A GPS is almost a must if you plan to go far as there is a lot of territory to cover. If you don’t have access to one, at least take a map.

Fall at Beavers Bend

Everyone thinks of vacationing when the weather is warm and the water is inviting but have you considered the advantages of getting away in the fall?

There is a lot more opportunity for a little seclusion this time of year. The Mountain Fork River, Oklahoma’s only year-round trout stream, can not only be very productive but you can get to that favorite spot and you may just find that you are the only one there. Broken Bow Lake is not just for summer either. You can easily find a boat to rent with discounted rates at Beavers Bend Marina and the lake will truly be yours. Bald Eagles nest in the winter and your chances of spotting one are far greater. The seclusion and quiet when you are the only boat on the lake (it seems) must truly be experienced.

Back on land you will find the local restaurants and business have a little more time to cater to your needs and everyone seems to slow down and have time to chat. Have you tried Body Harmony for a complete out of body experience? It will be easier to get in without an advanced appointment but still call to set one up. Wildlife seems to be more active in the fall. One reason for this is the cooler weather that serves as nature’s clock signaling that it’s time to get moving and prepare for winter. Also, the leaves are off the trees and the woods open up with much more visibility. With the foliage gone, the forest gets quieter and footsteps of several deer can be heard more easily. You never know what you will encounter at the back door of you cabin.

Fall and even winter at Beavers Bend is mild enough where the outdoors can be enjoyed and what better time of year when the peace and seclusion can wash over you and let you take in the fullness of what the area has to offer.

River float and fall colors

[SinglePic not found]This is the perfect time of year to get out and enjoy the Mountain Fork River at Beavers Bend Park. The pics really don’t do the colors justice. When the sun comes out and hits the trees they just light up. Rent a canoe or bring your own and discover the peace that can only come from being outdoors. The river isn’t nearly as crowded this time of year. The stillness and solitude are unmatched.
