Ski School

Dallas-Ft. Worth WaterSki & Wakeboard School & Camp

Just got back last week from the best slalom skiing instruction I have ever had. The instructors really know what they are doing and they make it fun for the adults as well as kids. There was all ages represented from beginner to advanced. It was also fun to see the small kids getting out there and learning. I am planning on taking my five year old next year. If you are even slightly interested in learning how to ski or wakeboard or need to polish up on your skills, you will not be disappointed. They will take the fear out of it and make it a day of fun. You will be ready to put what you’ve learned to the test the next time you visit beautiful Broken Bow Lake. Click on the link above to go to their website.

Music MAYnia & More this weekend 5/22/10

The banners are up.  The fliers are out.  The stage is set for the first ever Music MAYnia & More event this coming weekend, May 22nd from 11am til 8 pm.  It is a music, art & theater festival being held down at Beavers Bend State Park amphitheater.  I can’t imagine a more beautiful setting than having the Mountain Fork River running behind the stage with stunning rock cliffs as our backdrop. This is the 1st year for our new festival and we are extremely excited.  Our featured artist is world renown artist Harold Stevenson who is originally from Idabel, Oklahoma…. Only 15 miles away from Hochatown.  His works are featured in the Guggenheim Museum as well as in several art museums around the world.  His art will be displayed at the Forest Heritage Center in Beavers Bend State Park.  And of course on Saturday, May 22nd we will have our all day music/art/theater festival down in the park.  It’s free, free, free so come one, come all.  Food vendors will be available should you get hungry.  We have an incredible lineup of talent all throughout the day and there will be something to entertain everyone.  KKBI’s one and only Jay Lindly will be our emcee throughout the day.  And the evening promises to be the best of bands from Haworth, Idabel and even as far as Oklahoma City’s own Kanaga.  Be there and be able to claim you attended the first ever Music MAYnia & More….. kinda like saying you went to Woodstock!  The park is about 5 miles north of Broken Bow off of Hwy 259 in Beavers Bend State park.  Any questions call me, Shara, at 580.306.0603.  Hope to see ya’ll there!!!!!

Bass, Crappie hot on Broken Bow Lake now

It’s that time of year for some awesome fishing at Broken Bow Lake. The Bass have been staging for the spawn and it is fast approaching and the action on the lake is great. This is the first year in several that the weather has actually cooperated and the lake levels are normal giving us a great fishing season. Here is a nice largemouth and some crappie I caught yesterday afternoon. There was  not a cloud in the sky and the water is crystal clear so I was a bit surprised when I felt that much pull after setting the hook. Got him on a light action rod with 6 lb test. It was quite the fight and I’m ready for the next one. We have some awesome guides in the area so give us a call or look at our activities page for more info.

Music Under the Stars

Spring is right around the corner here in Hochatown, USA (otherwise known as the Beavers Bend | Broken Bow, OK area).  And that means it’s time to have another Music Under the Stars event on March 13th, 2010 from 6 to 10 pm.  It’ll be a great kick off for Spring Breakers and fun for the whole family as well.  We have several performers lined up for the evening including one who plays a saw!  Vanilla Gorilla Catering will be there offering tacos, chili, Frito pie as well as coffee and hot chocolate to warm you up while you sit around one of the several fire pits in the audience.  Parking and entertainment are FREE FREE FREE so how can you beat that?  It’s located in Hochatown Junction Station behind Body Harmony Day Spa.  Just look for the signs and listen for the live music.  Bring your lawn chairs & blankets and come have some fun under the stars….

Trout fishing outlook outstanding for 2010

The Oklahoma Wildlife Department will stock six additional loads of trout from January through March in the Mountain Fork River along with the regular scheduled stockings. That’s 40,000 additional trout! One’s chances of filling their stringer just shot up. You can log on to the wildlife department’s website by clicking on the link above for information about the stocking schedules, tips on how to catch trout, fishing licenses / regulations, and other information. Entertainment at Abendigos Restaurant across from our cabins

I’m on my way to go play at Abendigos Restaurant tonight.  I get to play my guitar and sing and share a musical experience with the crowd.  I have been around the world and must say this is one of THE best restaurants I’ve eaten at.  It’s a BYOB, except for the fact that they sell beer & wine coolers.  Excellent ambiance as well.  The patio is where all the good times roll in the spring/summer/fall months.  And Hickory Hill Cabins are located right across Hwy 259 (the main highway thru Hochatown, USA).  Convenient if you’ve had too much wine, etc. Come see us soon and experience all this fun!

Bald Eagles on the Mountain Fork River

bald-eagle Saw a bald eagle today while I was trout fishing on the river with my son who is 11. He (the bird) flew a ways down the length of the river away from me and perched on a tree top. We hopped in the truck and drove down a ways where a couple had spotted it also and we borrowed their binoculars to get a closer look.  Pretty cool.

The river as well as Broken Bow Lake are known for the bald eagle population especially this time of year. The trout fishing is also great right now and no fighting crowds to get those premium spots. Book a cabin today and come check it out.

Holidays at Broken Bow Cabins

Comments we hear time and again this time of year are how great it is to spend the holidays here amongst the peace and quiet of the pines. Guests are saying that a fully furnished cabin with everything you need to prepare dinner for a large group is the perfect way to be together. The cabins have plenty of room and if football is not on everyone’s list after eating there is plenty of other things to do like trout fishing, hiking, biking, explore the national forest, deer watching, eagle watching, and the list goes on. Deer Hunting

Hunting in McCurtain County can truly be a great experience. With thousands of acres of National Forest to explore, it won’t be hard to find that perfect spot to hang your stand or still hunt and take in some beautiful country. You can navigate the area on an ATV but be sure to check out the rules and regulations on our site. A GPS is almost a must if you plan to go far as there is a lot of territory to cover. If you don’t have access to one, at least take a map.

Fall at Beavers Bend

Everyone thinks of vacationing when the weather is warm and the water is inviting but have you considered the advantages of getting away in the fall?

There is a lot more opportunity for a little seclusion this time of year. The Mountain Fork River, Oklahoma’s only year-round trout stream, can not only be very productive but you can get to that favorite spot and you may just find that you are the only one there. Broken Bow Lake is not just for summer either. You can easily find a boat to rent with discounted rates at Beavers Bend Marina and the lake will truly be yours. Bald Eagles nest in the winter and your chances of spotting one are far greater. The seclusion and quiet when you are the only boat on the lake (it seems) must truly be experienced.

Back on land you will find the local restaurants and business have a little more time to cater to your needs and everyone seems to slow down and have time to chat. Have you tried Body Harmony for a complete out of body experience? It will be easier to get in without an advanced appointment but still call to set one up. There are many more activities indoor and out that are truly enjoyable this time of year. Again, check the activities page.

Wildlife seems to be more active in the fall. One reason for this is the cooler weather that serves as nature’s clock signaling that it’s time to get moving and prepare for winter. Also, the leaves are off the trees and the woods open up with much more visibility. With the foliage gone, the forest gets quieter and footsteps of several deer can be heard more easily. You never know what you will encounter at the back door of you cabin.

Fall and even winter at Beavers Bend is mild enough where the outdoors can be enjoyed and what better time of year when the peace and seclusion can wash over you and let you take in the fullness of what the area has to offer.

River float and fall colors

[SinglePic not found]This is the perfect time of year to get out and enjoy the Mountain Fork River at Beavers Bend Park. The pics really don’t do the colors justice. When the sun comes out and hits the trees they just light up. Rent a canoe or bring your own and discover the peace that can only come from being outdoors. The river isn’t nearly as crowded this time of year. The stillness and solitude are unmatched.
